History

It began 1795 with the creation of waterfalls, fountains and a grotto. 133 years later, the animal lover Bruno Schulz leased the waterfall restaurant, and opend first animal enclosures. Thru this he made a crowd-puller . When he opend the small animal park 1928, he had about 20 native species , including the eagle owl 's , coots , storks , red fox , marten , raccoons and deer. His life's work covered the fleeing Waffen SS that burned thr park to the grounds the 24th april 1945. But his son Günther Schulz awakened his father's work back to life and rebuild from 1957 the animal park with help from the GDR. In 1958 , the first domestic animals could move back and gradually also some exotics, such as big cats , bears and monkeys came. Therefore it was renamed as animal park. His successor, Dr Bernd Hensch, was appointed April 1989 to the director of the zoo. His new tasks were: environmental education, biodiversity and nature conservation and biological research topics as well as new outdoor installations , naturally designed animal enclosures , attractive leisure activities, accessibility - and especially : interesting animals from five continents , including animals from the EEP (European livestock program). This approach has ensured itself , only 160,000 visitors in 1990 came but in 2009 there were 250,000 visitors (the city has only 41,000 inhabitants !)
